More people using harbour launches

The Diamond Harbour launches carried more than 95,000 people across Lyttelton Harbour during the year ended March, 1984, the manager of the Lyttelton Borough Council's launch department has reported.

In a recent report to the council’s public utilities committee, Mr W. J. Baguley said the launches had carried about 75,000 people on regular trips and an additional 20,738 on chartered trips. This represented a big increase in patronage on the previous year, when just under 73,000 people were carried.

Because of poor weather during the summer months, fewer people made the trip to Quail Island — 16,000 people travelled to the island com-

pared with 30,000 last year, Mr Baguley said. Up to 500 people had made the trip to Quail Island on fine days, he said.

Mr Baguley said publicity had boosted numbers this year, with the tourist season now extending from early November to Easter.

Both launches had performed well during the year, although the Ngatiki was out of commission for several weeks for minor improvements. The department’s winter timetable, which excludes trips to Quail Island, will start on April 24. The launches will be available for charter during the winter.
