Six died in crash

Five passengers, in addition to the pilot, Captain A. W. Bartlett, died in the crash. They were: Irvine William Down, an insurance executive of Wellington; Miss Marlene Boynton, aged 25, a nurse of Rotorua; and Mrs Nicholas R. He founded the Tauranga Air Services in 1956, and when the company increased its capital the name was changed to Bay of Plenty Airways two years later. Captain Barlett bought the crashed plane in America and after having it fitted with special petrol tanks, flew it to New Zealand.
