Unionism

Sir, — Talk of abolishing the distinction, between employee and employer is daring talk — but refreshingly daring. We need more thinkers like Ted Hicks (April 7). Reaction from trade unions will be interesting — if reaction there be. While the labour force of Western nations has dramatically increased its share of income from productive assets in this century (a trend Karl Marx failed to anticipate), trade union leaders evade the vital Marxian question as to who should own the means of production. Yet basic to the theory of labour economics is the social fact of ownership being the determinant of property income. By their pledge to democratise the capital assets of this country, only the Social Credit candidates in the election stakes seem to understand this principle. — Yours, etc., HEATHER M. SMITH, Blenheim. April 9, 1984.
