Flag ceremonies

Sir,—The fostering of awareness of our country as an independent free nation with its own heritage is a good thing. What strikes me as hypocritical is that only last month the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, was saying that developed nations will expect to lose part of their national sovereignty (i.e. political independence) in order for Sir Robert’s new economic order proposals to work. Where does the National Party stand on the question of our continued existence as a free nation? One thing is sure — if Sir Robert Muldoon thinks he can get me as a voter to agree to his saddling us with “international taxes” to pay some Third World country’s debts, he has got another think coming. Mr Wellington’s proposals only hold merit if we continue to be a totally politically and economically independent nation. Otherwise it is only flag-waving. — Yours, etc., J. LANE. April 7, 1984.
