Railway service delays

Sir,—Mr P. S. Corliss’s reaction is predictably pathetic. How can pre-schoolers understand the inefficiencies and unproductiveness that

have been hidden behind the name of public servant? The situation where 7000 to 8000 railwaymen will lose their jobs has been put off for years. Those servants who have put the public interest first should not fear for their jobs. For too long this country has carried dead wood in a cloistered Public Service. One hopes this is the beginning of weeding out of free-loaders in the Public Service. The productive sector cannot carry them any longer and it is better they suffer the odd “inconveniences” and begin to help to cure one of the country’s major ills. Mr Corliss should point out these realities to his union. — Yours, etc., BERNADETTE CARPENTER (Mrs), West Melton. April 9, 1984.
