Teenagers’ programme

“Viewfinder,” the programme that deals with current issues affecting teenagers in the 15 to 18 age group, will return on One at 5.30 p.m. today. This will be its second consecutive year, and the producer, Huntly Eliott, said that items were intended to be of particular interest to people in their last year at school, in or out of work, or attending university for the first time.

The programme had considerable success last year with much material being sold to the Education and Labour Departments —

while an item on smoking is being used by the British Health Council in London.

The successful year was capped when Phillipa Dann won the Feltex Award for best new talent.

This year’s series, with the same reporters, Phillipa Dann, David Bindley and Uelese Petaia, will continue along similar lines with eight of the first 10 programmes looking at current issues.

On the political scene there will be an examination of the electoral roll as it applies to first-time voters; a profile on David Creig (Howick), who at 19 is the youngest borough councillor in New Zealand; and a look at the youth parties — the Young Nats, and its Labour Party counterpart. On a more general note,

an item will deal with the National Youth Council; Jig- saw (the adoption association), and the nuclear issue.

Problems relevant to students will also be investigated. They will include: sexual harassment; the immigration bill as it applies to overseas students; and flatting. “Viewfinder” will begin the year by looking at problems faced by young people living in a small town; it will go behind the scenes of break dancing; delve into the controversy concerning candidates wanting their School Certificate papers back; and begin the run-up on election issues with an item on the electoral roll.
