Operator was too kind
NZPA staff correspondent Washington
A Baltimore, Maryland, telephone operator with 17 years experience was dismissed because she spent too long talking to customers.
A computer keeps track of each operator, and they are not allowed to average more than 28 seconds a caller.
The Baltimore operator, Maevon Garrett, was rehired and given a twoweek suspension instead after the union intervened. She said she found it impossible to keep the jcalls short because many criers were elderly or confused.
