Psychiatric patients transferred—nurses

Recent statistics showing a reduction in the number of people in psychiatric hospitals are not all good news, according to the Nurses’ Society. The society’s national director, Mr David Wills, said part of the reduction had resulted from the largescale placement of many former hospital patients in rest homes and similar accommodation. “These patients have gone

from one institution to another and in doing so have often ended up in a substandard environment,” he said. “Their move from hospital to rest homes has not enhanced their quality of life.”

The National Health Statistics Centre has given figures showing that the number of people in psychiatric hospitals is at its lowest since 1879.
