Conservation in libraries ‘puny’
PA Wellington The Chief librarian at the Alexander Turnbull Library, Mr Jim Traue, says New Zealand’s library conservation efforts “look puny” in comprison to some overseas programmes. Mr Traue has returned from an overseas trip which included visits to libraries in Britain, Belgium, and Canada. He says he is impressed with the substantial investments being made overseas in the conservation of library materials. “For the national-heritage
collections the investments are huge and make our efforts look puny by comparison,” he said.
“In other countries any thing at risk is automatically copied, and they are spending heavily on restoring the originals of rare or unique materials.”
Mr Traue visited London at the invitation of the British Library. He then visited the bigger research libraries in Belgium, and the National Library and public archives in Canada.
