Breast-feeding facilities wanted by midwives

The midwives section of the Nurses Association wants the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm, to promote breast-feeding facilities in public places. The suggestion will be discussed at the association’s conference early next month. The chairwoman of the midwives section, Ms Ann McQueen, said there should be a national logo to identify the breast-feeding facilities. “We had a letter from the Royal College of Midwives in Britain asking what we

did about promoting breast feeding, so we asked other midwives around the country what was available. “There really were not many places available,” she said. “Quite a few women are still shy about breast-feed-ing in public, and some have even stopped because of the lack of facilities. They don’t want to be ‘one of those women who are their breasts in public’.” Ms McQueen said that facilities should be provided in all shopping malls and entertainment venues.
