Road work continues at the junction of Riccarton Road and Picton Avenue, the eastern boundary of the new $BOO,OOO development which has been introduced by the Riccarton Borough Council to make shopping more pleasant, improve the flow of traffic, and create a
“town centre” atmosphere. Work on the project is due to finish on the westward boundary, outside the Riccarton Mall, in 1986. The plan is intended to introduce a new look to the area by improving and enlarging the footpaths, rede-
signing intersections, and establishing trees, planter boxes, and street furniture.
The project is seen by planners as a compromise between catering for a major arterial route and providing a better shopping area and environment.
