Badminton panel
PA Wellington The New Zealand Badminton Federation’s problems with its senior selection panel continued at the federation’s annual meeting in Wellington at the week-end.
Only two members of the new panel were chosen. Murray Weatherston (Wellington North) and Vai Gow (Auckland) were elected but the third member of the panel must come from the South Island and no such selector could be found.
Invercargill’s Paul Skelt is to act as the southern selector til the federation's management committee are able to find a suitable person. Last year the senior selection panel of Gilda Tompkins, Alison Branfield and Alby Duckmanton resigned en bloc
after a disagreement with the management committee. In their place an interim panel of Skelt, Nancy Fleming and Jeff Robson were appointed and these three chose the teams which played in the Über and Thomas Cup competitions in Hong Kong last month.
There was a surprise in the vote for junior selectors on Saturday when one of the sitting members of the panel, Gary Threthewey (North Shore) was voted off. Two South Islanders, Steve Bennett (Southland) and lan Ross (Canterbury), and Nelson Allerby of Orua form the new junior panel. Hawke’s Bay will stage the 1985 national senior championships, Hamilton the 1985 under18s and Christchurch the 1985 national age-group event.
