Last chance for medallist
Mrs Trish Goring (right), who has launched an appeal to send a former Olympic silver medallist, Mr Bpb Stiles (left), to a reunion of 1932 Olympic medallists in Los Angeles, holds the letter which had dashed his hopes of attending. Mr Stiles, who won his medal in the coxless pairs,
was among the surviving medallists from the 1932 Olympics who had been invited to a reunion in Los Angeles in August. Since then, the organisers have declined to pay the travelling expenses of the medallists, and Mr Stiles cannot now afford to go. Mrs Goring said donations
had come in slowly, but since the appeal had appeared in “The Press” on March 15, she had been approached by persons offering to help. She said that so far she had received about $2OO, and has asked those wishing to make a donation to get in touch with her at telephone 480-
067 or at her home, 10 Ham Road, Christchurch.
Mr Stiles said last evening that he had been embarrassed when he heard about the appeal, but very pleased that someone had gone to such trouble on bis behalf. Mr Stiles’s crew member, Mr Rangi Thompson, died in 1971.
