Tauranga may ship IM travs of kiwifruit

PA Rotorua Up to a million trays of kiwifruit will leave the Tauranga Port during June. A European Shipping Conference Line ship will load about 800,000 trays of kiwifruit for a European port and later in the month a Laurensen Line vessel will load up to 450,000 trays for Japan.

The Secretary of the Kiwifruit Exporters’ Association, Mr J. Aitken, of Auckland, said the exact quantities loaded would depend on the amount of fruit available. A team from the exporters’ shipping committee will decide on the European port of discharge. Flushing, Antwerp, Bremen, Bremerhaven, and

Zeebrugge are all possibilities. “The association must be assured the port facilities ‘ can unload the cargo efficiently, and that cool storage facilities are also available,” Mr Aitken said. Recently all kiwifruit exports left from Auckland and Wellington in container ships.
