China trip lined up

PA Wellington The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Shearer, and a team of D.S.I.R. officials will visit China in

the first two weeks of April at the invitation of the Chinese Government. They will hold talks on co-operative programmes for breeding kiwifruit varieties and joint research in Antarctica. The delegation will also look at Chinese pasture developments, food processing, electronics and computer software, small-scale light manufacturing, geothermal research, earth sciences, and ceramics. Dr Shearer’s office said plans for a meeting'with a New Zealander, Riwi Alley, and visits to the Ming

outside Peking and the Great Wall had not been confirmed. The D.S.I.R. Director-Gen-eral, Mr Graeme Butler, who will accompany Dr Shearer, said they had asked to see the Chinese work in environmental science because that was an area where New Zealand could help. The delegation, including the department’s two assistant director-generals and the director of the Christchurch Industrial Division, will leave New Zealand on March 31 and return on April 15.
