Detective appointed to Bangkok

PA Wellington Detective Chief Inspector Philip Berryman has been appointed the New Zealand police drug liaison officer in Bangkok, replacing Detective Superintendent Allan Galbraith. Mr Berryman, aged 46, joined the police in 1959, and apart from a two-year stint in the uniformed branch has spent his entire career z with the C. 1.8. He rose through the C. 1.8. ranks at Christchurch, Nelson, and Porirua, and in

1975 was promoted to detective inspector at Hamilton. The next year he headed the extensive inquiries into the disappearance of the hitchhiker, Mona Blades, aged 18, near Taupo. No trace of Miss Blades was ever found. In 1982 Mr Berryman was transferred to Police National Headquarters as deputy director of drug enforcement and intelligence. He will leave for Bangkok in July and take up his post the next month, after a Thai language course.
