Mr McLay favourite for Deputy

by Michael Hannah, Parliamentary reporter National Party members of Parliament will gather in Wellington this morning for a two-day caucus meeting, the highlight of which is expected to be the selection of a new Deputy Prime Minister. The Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, enters the selection race as the clear favourite, although it was doubtful yesterday if he had a clear majority to win on a first ballot against the other two contenders for the post, the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, and the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch.

Counting has been proceeding in the last few days by supporters of all three contenders. One member of Parliament suggested that lobbying was much lighter than at the last deputy leadership selection in 1981. A Cabinet reshuffle appears remote, whoever wins the deputy’s post. The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, made it clear earlier this year that he favoured carrying the same Cabinet through to the General Election, after which changes could be made to replace any retiring Ministers or others who might have lost their seats.
