Expensive failure
By J. J. BOYLE Notusho was an expensive favourite in the Methven and South Rakaia Hotels Handicap, the Ashburton club's T.A.B. Trifecta race and third leg of the T.A.B. treble yesterday.
The ' Nelson-owned and trained Beaufort Sea gelding laboured and struggled on a rain-affected track, and finished a well-beaten ninth. The finish was dominated by the Ashburton-trained Sukerbelle and the Winga-tui-trained Paddle. Sukerbelle had been forced wide all the way, but snatched a nose victory over Paddle.
Sea Fort, the best of the others, was three lengths back.
Selkirk finished fourth after a preliminary with a difference.
He pulled away from his attendant after he was brought into the birdcage before the race, and jumped the birdcage rail. After getting a foreleg caught up in the reins he stood quietly until his trainer. Pat Corboy regained possession, and he was passed on to his jockey, John Dowling, to take his place in the field.
