Two caught in age ‘trap’

NZPA-AP Sao Paulo Two elderly burglars were caught red-handed because one could not hear his partner’s shouted warning to hurry and make a getaway, the police said. Police Inspector Osvaldo Jesus da Silva said Abel Palmeirim, aged 74, and Stanislaw Pereira Lopes, aged 73, were nabbed during a break-in at a house. An accountant, Jose Carlos Viriato Freitas, was returning home from holiday when he saw his house lit up and heard Lopes yelling at Palmeirim to hurpr up. “But Palmeirim, who

doesn’t hear very well, just took his time and kept up his leisurely pace. He was still busy stealing when we arrived. Lopes tried to escape but his varicose veins slowed him down and he was caught quite easily,” Mr Silva said. “I think they wanted to relive the good old days when both had reputations as being among the city’s most skilful burglars.” The two men, who were armed with a toy gun and a penknife, have criminal records “two metres long” and have each served more than 20 years in jail.
