Turkish boats ‘fired on destroyer’

NZPA-AP Athens The Greek Government has said five Turkish torpedo boats fired on a Greek destroyer in the Aegean Sea, but missed. It claimed that the United States had “emboldened” Turkey into provocative action. A spokesman for the Turkish Embassy in Washington said the Turkish ships were carrying out a routine naval artillery practice in international waters and prior notification was given “in accordance with all relevant international conventions and in keeping with previous routine practice of the Turkish Navy.” The spokesman, Murat Ersavic, said a Greek warship and a fishing boat entered the impact area and that no shells landed closer than 200 metres to the ships. The Turkish vessels then suspended their artillery operations.
