Ship keeps to schedule

Allegations of serious mismanagement and deficiencies in the construction of the Royal Australian Navy’s amphibious heavylift ship Tobruk, berthed at Lyttelton, are not expected to disrupt the ship’s New Zealand sailing schedule.

A Navy spokesman said yesterday that the Tobruk would sail from Lyttelton for Great Barrier Island on Monday as planned, to take

part in Exercise Northern Safari with the New Zealand Army. The visit by H.M.A.S. Tobruk to Lyttelton coincided with tabling of a joint Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee report on the ship in the Australian Parliament. Loading of New Zealand equipment, which included a contingent , of Mercedes Army trucks, was completed yesterday morning. A

group of Christchurch-based troops will embark tomorrow afternoon in preparation for Monday’s departure. A spokesman for the ship said the dial-a-sailor or soldier programme had attracted a “marvellous response” from the Christchurch public. He said'the Tobruk was running out of crew in response to the hospitality. The Tobruk carries a crew of 176.
