Breakdancers contest skills

The uncontrollable crowds which forced an end to the 3ZM breakdancing contest two weeks ago were not evident at the second attempt to hold the show. The contest, held last evening at Canterbury Court, was limited to 3000 spectators — a stark contrast to the 10,000 people who jammed into Cathedral Square the first time the event was held.

Young teen-agers made up the bulk of the audience which surrounded the stage in the centre of the court, and sat in terraced seating round the walls.

Six teams of four dancers displayed their breakdancing talents. More difficult and spectacular moves, such as back and hand spinning, won raucous applause. Ace Breakers was judged the best team. It won $lOOO worth of clothing and a large cassette radio. The team will also have the chance to take part in a national breakdancing competition. The Miyaki Breakdancing Troupe was second. The team won $5OO of clothing and a cassette radio.

Twilight Wonders, third, won a cassette radio.
