"Kiwi’ boosts civil defence
Nita Johnson (left) and Lynda South chat about what to do in a civil defence emergency with the “cautious kiwi” during the kiwi’s walk around Christchurch streets yesterday.
The “cautious kiwi” is part of a promotion for a 24-hour civil defence exhibition, to be held at the Addington Show Grounds from March 31 to April 1. The promotion is being organised by the Canterbury. Youth Promotion Council, which represents youth groups presenting displays at the exhibition. The council’s administration officer, Janice Hobbs, said that it was amazing how many people did not know what to do in a civil defence emergency. She said that the exhibition will highlight the importance of disaster preparation. Among others, there will be a St John ambulance display on first aid, a Municipal Electricity Department display on what to do in the home in an emergency, and an S.P.C.A. display on what to do with pets.
A poster competition held among youth groups taking part will also; be displayed at the exhibition.
