Road running clash
Two of Canterbury’s leading women road runners in the last two seasons, Mary Warne and Christine Burden, both of the University club, will clash in the annual Teddington to Diamond Harbour road race over 11.5 km today (Saturday). Burden was the province’s leading road runner in the 1982-83 season, while Warne has dominated this season in the absence of Burden, who spent most of the season recovering from a leg injury. However, Burden was runnerup in the Canterbury women’s 10,000 m championship and took fastest time in the 20km cham-
pionship. Warne did not race in either of these events, so the pair will clash for the first time this season today. They will start from 21 minutes behind the front-mark-ers in the field of 255 runners. The backmarkers in the men’s section are Kevin Barnes (Christchurch), Kevin O’Sullivan (University), Greg Clark (Toe H), John Gamblin' (Ashburton) and Mark Mitchell (Sumner).
O’Sullivan should have the edge but with the race counting for championship points the others will be eager to stay with the pace and win if they can.
