Aust, industrials ease
Resource stocks firmed but industrials eased in quiet trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. The market opened broadly stronger on steadiness on the London and New York stock exchanges and a firmer gold price which encouraged overseas buying. Brokers reported demand for Santos, and leading metals and industrials. Brokers attributed the demand to the firmer U.S. dollar.
The lack of local support and upward pressure on interest rates saw the allindustrials index turned down in mid-morning.
The all-ordinaries index was up 1.1 at 719.6. the all-
industrials down 0,5 at 952.1, and the all-resources 2.3 points higher at 535.3. BHP rose 5c to 1295 and CSR 4c to 355. Small rises took CRA to 528, MIM 330, North Broken Hill 258, EZ, 504, and Bougainville 245. Golds rose with Poseidon and Peko up 10c at 470 and 540. Uranium issues finned while coal stocks were mixed. Santos rose 8c to 698.
