AUSt. deficit grows
NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia’s 1983-84 Federal Budget deficit could be about sAust3os million higher than the $8361 million expected in August last year, but the Government will try to rein in the increase during the next four months.
“The Budget deficit may be about S3OOM greater than estimated at Budget time,” the Treasurer, Mr Paul Keating, and the Finance Minister, Mr John Dawkins, said yesterday when releasing details of the Government’s mid-year review of Budget estimates. The Ministers said the revised estimates included requests by Commonwealth Departments for further funds but these would be subjected to intensive review.
The estimates point to overruns in public debt interest payments, some pensions and benefits and spending on home ownership schemes and youth employment training programmes.
