Investing on the New Zealand Sharemarket. By A. W. Burrowes and R. D. Mulholland. Macmillan, 1983. 172 pp. $14.95 (paperback). The first edition of this helpful little book was written in 1981 and appeared in 1982. Since then there have been important changes affecting sharemarket investors, especially as a result of the freeze on incomes and from changes in taxation. Regulations continue to change so that in some matters of detail this new edition is already out of date. Even so, the authors — an investment analyst and a lecturer in business law — provide a topical and reliable guide, especially for small investors who have been attracted to sharemarket investment in recent times. The explanations are concise and clear, and seldom assume much prior knowledge. An omission that should be remedied when the book is again revised is the absence of specific advice on investing in oil search shares. Here, especially, the market showed late last year that thousands of New Zealanders are eager to join in, but are not necessarily as wise as they might be in their decisions.
