The article below is the winning entry in the feature article competition organised jointly by “The Press” and the South Island Writers’ Association to mark the association’s 21st birthday.

S.I.W.A. was founded on January 31, 1963, with the late Dame Ngaio Marsh as patron. Its aim is to promote good writing and good fellowship among writers, helping them to

gain experience and confidence through competitions, criticism and discussion of many facets of writing. A greenstone trophy in memory of Dame Ngaio Marsh is presented annually to the winner of a short story competition.

Seminars and week-end workshops are held from time to time, and one such seminar is being held this week-end to co-incide with the Arts Festival.
