Assistance for festival

Sir,—The chairman of the Southern Regional Arts Council, Brett Riley, has stated that the arts council financially supports the Christchurch Festival, both directly and indirectly to a large degree. When the festival budget is over $309,000 a grant of $5OOO and guarantees against loss of $4950 can hardly be termed to a large degree. The essential funding required by the Christchurch Festival is the same as that already given to the C. 5.0., Court Theatre and New Zealand Ballet — namely for administration. While the Arts Council has supported New Zealand performers for the Christchurch Festival, it still has a policy of not financially supporting international artists. This appears to be adopting a policy of isolating both the New Zealand public and performers from the important international contact which is essential for developing new ideas.—Yours, etc.,

RAY SLEEMAN. Director, 1984 Christchurch Festival. March 9, 1984.
