Taumarunui curfew
Sir, — The curfew in Taumarunui is very disturbing. If it were just the police breaking the law it would be bad enough, but when Cabinet Ministers approve it, it is scandalous. Parliament is where laws are made or changed. If this curfew is such a great idea, then it should be put before the House. The principle of innocence until proved guilty seems to be lacking. If you are out on the street after a certain hour (a legal right) then you can be hauled in and virtually have to prove your innocence. This curfew seems better suited to some banana republic run by the army. It is definitely not appropriate in New Zealand. — Yours, etc., BRYAN LACEY. March 8, 1984.
