Snake blood relished
NZPA-Reuter Jakarta
Java’s booming snake trade has caused a scarcity of the reptiles on the island and is threatening the existence of some rare species, says the official Antara news agency. The slaughter of snakes for their skins, blood, and flesh and the capture of
some varieties for house pets has reduced Java’s snake population. The agency said that it had become fashionable among certain people to drink snake’s blood for health purposes, particularly to keep their skin looking young.
Indonesian folklore says snake blood is an aphrodi-
siac and makes one live longer. A recent seminar to discuss methods of saving Indonesia’s 400 species of snakes from possible extinction advocated special breeding programmes and the protection of rare; snakes such as the python nolorus, the green sanca, and the sanca timor. i
