Pentathlon semi-finals
The 1984 Cheviot Show will be the venue for a new event — the Tasman regional finals of the Farm Skills Pentathlon. The contest involves teams of five competitors chosen by Young Farmers Clubs from their members, who compete in five practical events to test their combined skills.
The competition has been organised nationally by the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand in conjunction with the Young Farmers Clubs and is sponsored by the New Zealand Stock and Station Agents Association. Each member of a team must compete in two of the five tests of skill, choosing from fencing, shearing, livestock assessment, tractor driving and crop recognition. The winning team from the Cheviot regional final will meet other regional finalists in Auckland at the Easter Show and from there a team will be selected to
travel to Scotland and compete against other Commonwealth teams at the Royal Highland Bi-Centen-ary Show in June of this year.
Competition on Saturday is expected to be fierce, with teams travelling from Nelson, Marlborough, Christchurch and North Canterbury districts.
The Tasman region as defined for the pentathlon is the South Island area from Cook Strait to the Rakaia River, including the West Coast.
The shearing and stock judging events will take place alongside the shearing pavilion at the Cheviot Showground while the tractor driving, fencing and crop recognition tests will be held in the rugby field west of the main ground. Final results will not be known until Monday when the stock judging event is marked.
