A display in the window of Cheviot’s craft shop, The Acorn, shows that there is more to the local A. and P. Show than the livestock and farming classes.

The isolated community supports a thriving arts and crafts group with interests ranging from wool crafts and pottery to painting and photography. Entries in this years show give some indication of both the popularity and the variety of such interests: the home, garden and hobby classes account for nearly as many entries as the combined farming and livestock classes.

These indoor sections of the show are housed in modern buildings that have, in most cases, been purpose-built by the

Cheviot A. and P. Society during the last few years.

The wool, produce, art and photography exhibits will be displayed in their own building behind the secretary’s office at the showground and the home industries and schools sections, which enjoy a great deal of support from the Cheviot Area School and the Parnassus School, will be found next to the cafeteria in the building close to the main road entrance to the ground.

Classes for school children, not all of which are competitive, include handwriting, art work and model making, social studies displays and photography. A special junior section in the cookery classes allows local children to display their homecraft skills.
