Jonson qualifies for Olympics
PA Auckland A Hamilton teenager, Gail Jonson, qualified for the Olympic Games 400 m individual medley when she beat the nomination standard at the New Zealand swimming championships in Hamilton last night. Jonson’s performance had the Hamilton Centennial Pools complex audience roaring its support as she outpaced an Australian, Karen Phillips, to take second place. Another Australian, Sue Landells, won in 4min 54.11 s but her swim was over-shadowed by Jonson as she powered away to beat the qualifying time of 4min 57.185. Auckland’s Brett Austin also beat the qualifying standard in an exciting final of the men's 100 m breaststroke. Austin, who has previously beaten the Olympic qualifying time, finished third in Imin 05.24 s to set a new New Zealand record. Results:
