Support group for bereaved
Bereaved parents formed the first South Island chapter of Compassionate Companions at a Christchurch meeting on Wednesday. Members of nearly 50 families attended to form another support group in the world-wide network for those who had lost children through accident or illness.
The mental health advisor of the Canterbury Hospital Board, Mr Colin Jamieson, said that the meeting went well with the appearance of about 90 per cent of those who had been interested in the idea. One person travelled from Invercargill to the first monthly meeting which he said showed the great need for such a group. Another chapter had been started in the North Island and Mr Jamieson knew of a small group of parents also meeting in Ikawai, South Canterbury.
