Scott Base neighbour?
PA Wellington The Chinese Government should consider siting any base it plans to build in Antarctica next to New Zealand’s own Scott Base on Ross Island, says the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Shearer. Dr Shearer said yesterday that this idea had been raised by the immediate past Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr Qin
Lizhen, and he planned to discuss it further with Chinese officials during his twoweek visit to China in early April. The Chinese might favour the idea for tactical and logistical a reasons, Dr Shearer said, as New Zealand had a “very substantial communications facility” at Scott Base and the United States base at McMurdo was nearby. Landing facilities were
already provided there so the Chinese would not need to build a landing strip.
Dr Shearer said it was possible the Chinese might also work from Christchurch, as does the United States Antarctic programme. He was interested in improving the facilities at Christchurch and if the Chinese were interested in working from there it would strengthen that case.
