Albion retains perfect softball record

Special correspondent Robert Brown Albion retained its perfect record at the national women’s interclub softball tournament when it beat a determined Lions (Hawke’s Bay), side, 21, yesterday. Late on Wednesday night it had outscored Manukau (Counties), 7-2.

It was inevitable that Albion would score against Lions as runners were left on base for the first three turns at bat. At the bottom of the fourth the lead-off batter, Christine Tew, smacked a single down the third base line and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Then, with two down, Vicky Paskell forced an infield error to make base and advance Tew. The catcher Penny Salton, drove magnificently to left field to bring home Tew, and then

Paskell dashed home on another passed ball. Lions replied with one run at the bottom of the seventh innings when Dallas Ratu hit to left field and scored off a centre-field drive by Robyn Tuhiwai. Albion’s player-coach, Cheryl Kemp, was in devastating form on the pitching mound, taking 12 strike-outs from 24 batters faced. Young Janenne Gould also had a fine game in the field, featuring in a great double play at the top of the first to squash an early scoring opportunity for Lions. The Albion-Manukau encounter proved to be a close-fought affair until the top of the seventh. The score was only 3-2 before a series of hits and numerous fielding errors allowed Lynda O’Cain, Nicky Hudson, Tew and Paskell to

score and give Albion a comfortable winning margin. Early yesterday Lions and Saints (Hutt Valley) played out a nine-innings marathon which Saints eventually won, 5-4. The New Zealand captain, Naomi Shaw, gave her side the win when she hit a triple to score two runs. Other matches resulted in Metro (Auckland) easily beating Rajahs (Otago), 12-0. However, Island Bay (Wellington), out-scored even that by thrashing a lethargic Manukau side, 15-0, while earlier Manukau had beaten Melville (Waikato), 7-2. The luckless Rajahs team also lost, 1-9, to Saints. Today Albion meets Melville, a match it should win, and this evening it plays a very polished Metro side, a game "it needs to win to stay in contention.
