Abit Leica will test elders in Trentham feature

By

J. J. BOYLE

The youthful brilliance of Abit Leica should set problems for the others in the Double Brown 1600, the Wellington Racing Club’s $60,000 feature race tomorrow.

Abit Leica has won his last three races, and has made spectacular improvement to take him high on three-year-old rankings this season. His defeat of I’m Henry and others in the 1600 m Wellington Stakes carried the stamp of excellence.

He has since won in illustrious company at weight-for-age, coming from far back for victory over Final Affair, Ebony Belle, McGinty and others in the Waikato Racing Club’s Lion Brown Sprint, 1400 m, at Te Rapa on February 14. Abit Leica scorched over the 1400 m in 1:21.53 - surely one of the outstanding sprint performances of the summer.

Riccarton’s Gaffa is a second three-year-old in the field for tomorrow’s Trifecta race and second leg of the T.A.B. double. Gaffa was fourth after being responsible for the pacemaking in Abit Leica’s Wellington Stakes.

He was unable to do himself justice in the Wellington Derby, but his only start since produced a win in the 1600 m White Robe Lodge Stakes at Wingatui.

Gaffa will be one of two runners for the Dave Kenstable.

Clansman, the other stable hopeful, also has fairly formidable powers as a metric miler, and his chances tomorrow should not be gauged on his unplaced run after pulling hard at a middle distance last Saturday. Dig In, a third runner for the South Island, hardly had a chance to distinguish himself on the first day of the meeting. He missed the start slightly, and was never able to get back into a contending position.

Idaho’s Gift will be attempting to put gloss on first-day form. He could not have been more impressive in winning at this distance last Saturday, and it will be surprising if his scale weight of 57.5 blunts the edge of his finishing powers. Kiwi will be the big attraction if not everyone’s favourite in the betting Sies, for the Chalmers es, first leg of the T.A.B. double.

The six-year-old which astonished Australia with his finishing powers to win the Melbourne Cup last November, has had only one race since the big one at Flemington, and that was on December 17.

Plans for a second Wellington Cup start had to be waved away when he was troubled by a virus, and it will be one of the training feats of the season if Snow Lupton Can successfully launch him on a fresh campaign tomorrow. Isle Of Man, a close and gallant second in the Wellington Cup, showed he had rallied well since that race when third in McGinty’s Air New Zealand Stakes last Saturday week. He never put the winner under strain, but there was

no faster finisher in the race. The Dimple and Kapelle Lady will be striving to prove first-day form valuable.

There was little to choose between them on their performances to quinella the corresponding race last week, and, while this field looks slightly stronger, they are deserving of much respect.
