Near-record entries

The Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association has received a near record number of entries for its annual show tomorrow. The record was set in 1978, when 4769 entries were received. This year, the association has 4705, which is 288 more than last year. There are fewer sheep and pet entries this year but the cattle and horse and B sections are showing hy increases.

The Canterbury-Westland branch of the Angus Cattle Society has helped bolster the cattle numbers, with the society choosing Mayfield as its feature show, while the Limousin breeders have also chosen Mayfield for an unofficial gathering. Horse and pony entries at shows in Mid-Canterbury are seemingly always on the increase, and it is understandable at Mayfield, where the ring-surface has a reputation spreading much further than the county. Entries are: Sheep and pets, 764 (901 last year); cattle, 46 (27); goats, 22 (34); donkeys, 42 (42); horses and ponies, 1174 (1036); dog trial, 72 (83); sheepdogs, 10 (21); wool, 88 (65); poultry, 65 (56); farm produce, 42 (54); vegetables, 127 (125); field roots, fruit and wine, 36 (45); preserves, 105 (104); cooking, 343 (304); floral, 243 (203); needlework and knitting, 289 (209); art and craft, 145 (118); photography, 149 (162); dancing, 96 (112); make and model, 25 (15); school classes 812 (701).
