Bank in Thatcher row
NZPA-Reuter London Britain’s biggest bank entered a row yesterday over the role played by Margaret Thatcher’s son in winning a building contract in Oman. Barclays Bank issued a statement after “The Sunday Times” newspaper reSirted at the week-end that rs Thatcher’s son, Mark, and husband, Denis, were co-signatories to an account used to receive a consultancy fee from Britain’s Cementation company. The bank said that it planned to lodge a complaint against the newspaper with Britain’s watchdog Press Council, alleging that bank staff had been tricked into giving information about the account. Barclays said that it had apologised to Denis Thatcher.
“The Sunday Times” editor, Andrew Neil, denied that his reporters had obtained the information by trickery. Cementation won a £3OO million (about $669 million) contract to build a university in the Gulf State of Oinan after a visit there by Mrs Thatcher in 1981.
