Pre-season soccer
Christchurch United beat Western, 1-0, in a pre-season soccer tournament at Rangers Park last evening. Bobby Almond opened the scoring for United midway through the second half, after a strong run down the right by Allan Boath. Almond’s header from close range would have come as a relief for United as it had been put under strong midfield pressure by a determined Western side.
There was no shortage of vigorous, aggressive tackling by both sides and Western showed it would be no pushover in the coming Hertz League competition. In the early match, New Brighton and Nomads United drew, 1-1. Barry McTague put Brighton ahead in the first half and Mike Fullen, who has been included in the national under 19 squad, equalised for Nomads after the interval.
