University given $5000
A $5OOO gift has been made to the Asian languages department of the University of Canterbury by a Japanese man, Mr Y. Okamatsu. The senior lecturer in the department, Ms C. Stevens, said that the money would be invested and the interest used as a travel grant The grant would be given to a third-year student to help
pay for a trip to Japan. Mr Okamatsu has made other gifts to the university and to Christchurch. A set of 32 picture books on Japan was given to the Canterbury Public Library about four years ago and a second set to the university about two years ago. A set of slides of Japan was also given to the university.
