Islamic law
A photograph on this page yesterday, of a public flogging adminstered under Islamic law, accompanied an article on the resurgence of strict adherence to Islamic law in the countries bordering the Arabian Gulf. The photograph was taken in Pakistan, an Islamic Statethat encourages a literal inter-
pretation of the Islamic Law. Some readers may have assumed that the photograph was taken in a Gulf State. The flogging of prisoners in Qatar, in the Gulf, is not done in public and authenticated photographs of the public punishments of offenders against Islamic law in Saudi Arabia are seldom available.
