Drinks in hospital

Sir,—ln reply to E. Gale’s letter of March 2 let me put the position as I see it from my bed in the Southern Cross Trust Hospital. I entered hospital in a state of extreme anxiety to undergo a serious operation. From the outset I have seen and experienced true professionalism, total dedication and genuine human warmth from all levels of staff. That a glass of wine should be offered to those persons who are physically able to take it, brings this hospital right into the 1980 s and dispels that unfortunate institutionalism that still exists in some others. I doubt that all of the medical profession consider alcoholic liquor a toxic poison. I look forward to the day when I am well enough to be offered a glass of wine with my meals.—Yours, etc., DAVID R. PARKES. March 5, 1984.
