Thompson Twins on German TV
NZPA staff correspondent London The flamboyant pop trio, “The Thompson Twins,” which has the New Zealander, Allanah Currie, as its female performer, face an increasingly heavy schedule. Before their current 32concert tour around Britain they released their latest single, “Doctor, Doctor,” which currently rates No. 5 on Britain’s Top of the Pops chart. Allanah Currie, who arrived in Britain in 1979, founded the group with its other two members, Tom Bailey and Joe Leeway, three years ago. But now, by having to cope>with demands for appearances as well as a fastgrowing fan following, they have been chastised for leaving their fans “in the lurch ... and plumping for foreigners." The tabloid newspaper, the “Sun,” reported this when they cancelled one of their four London concerts to appear on German television. The 3500 people who rushed to get tickets two months ago were offered an alternative date from last
week’s arranged concert or their money back. A spokesman for the group said: “The group felt the German date was more important because it is so hard to break into the European market” As a result they are playing at London’s Hammersmith Odeon again this week, when they were to
have a day off. Their other smash hits, all released as singles, include “Lies,” “We Are Detective,” “Lover on Your Side,” and “Hold Me Now,” which rated No. 8 last month.
They still have a dozen or so concerts to do during the next two weeks followed by two more in Ireland.
