First festival
Christchurch’s first Women’s Festival will be held in North Hagley Park on Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Designed to commemorate International Women’s Day, it will provide a relaxed and festive way in which women can make contact with women’s groups and see what they are doing, as well as enjoying a festival of women’s talents.
A lively entertainment programme of women dancers, singers and actors will be compered by well known entertainer, Janice Gray, and prominent women’s group personalities.
Entertainers include Regulation Bloomers, a new and satirical women’s music group; Vai Minifie, a jazz and blues singer; Janice
Gray with the Six Tits; Katherine Humphrey and Friend; Straight Out; and Cynthia Roberts.
The occasion is seen as ideal for family picnic lunches, with food supplied by the many groups participating. About 24 groups will run stalls, displays, sales tables and information stands. They include Centrepoint, the Young Women’s Christian Association, La Leche League, Toastmistresses, the Women’s Refuge Centre, the Battered Women’s Support Group, National Organisation for Women, the Health Alternatives for Women and the Electrical Association for Women. Children will be catered for with the Summer Times earthball and parachute, while the Girl Guides will have a campfire singalong.
