Search for plane fails

PA Auckland The lower reaches of the Waikato River were trawled yesterday in a bid to find the wreckage of the light aircraft which disappeared on February 26 on a flight between Wanganui and Ardmore, south of Auckland. The aircraft, a Piper Cherokee with four persons aboard, struck bad weather late in the trip. About 40 policemen and civilians using Army LandRovers checked ravines and 35 square kilometres of bush near Port Waikato yesterday. As a result of a report from a fisherman, the police arranged for the Waiuku search and rescue unit to trawl the lower reaches of the Waikato River. The fisherman told the police on Monday that a net he had set snagged on an object on the riverbed. Divers stood by as two boats manned by Waiuku search and rescue men trawled the river. Inspector T. B. Wallace, of the Auckland police, said the river search had been hampered by dirty water after heavy rain. Divers made another search of the river, near sunset, but without success.
