Nerve-gas man tried to cut wrists

The nerve-gas extortionist, Bruce Douglas Cameron, tried to cut his wrists in the Christchurch Central Police Station cells after being recaptured in the city last Friday. Chief Superintendent J. A. Jamieson confirmed yesterday that Cameron had used a serrated plastic knife to try to cut his wrists on Saturday morning, the day he had been due to fly to Auckland. The knife had been given to him at breakfast. “It was a very trivial incident. There was no bleeding and it was only a little cut,” said Mr Jamieson. Cameron was flown to Auckland on schedule later that day. Early last month, staff at the Mount Eden Prison at Auckland had to resuscitate Cameron after he tried to hang himself with sheets in his cell. Two days later Cameron was transferred to Oakley Hospital. He escaped from there on February 22 and was recaptured in Christchurch on March 2. Cameron. has been remanded in custody to appear in the District Court at Auckland on Friday.
