Gang terrorises isolated hamlet
PA Wanganui Days of gang terror culminating in an alleged rape have left the isolated Wanganui River hamlet of Pipiriki stunned and angry. The alleged offence occurred early yesterday in a lonely Pipiriki farmhouse when a Mongrel Mob member attacked a young teenage girl. It is believed gang members removed a radio set, the sole means of communication, from the house before leaving. The police said the girl was still distressed yesterday afternoon. About 40 gang members, mainly from Auckland and Wellington, were in the tiny
settlement, about 70km upriver from Wanganui, to attend the funeral of a former gang member. Over the Sunday-Monday period the police also investigated another rape complaint against a gang member arising from an incident at the Raetihi Hotel, north of Pipiriki. Pipiriki residents said the gang members were “unkempt and animal-like.” “It really frightened us. It is so far away from help here,” one resident said. The police arrested one man and charged him with rape. Four others have been charged with receiving stolen property.
