’Quake stops power plant

PA Wellington Earthquake damage has stopped power generation from the Tokaanu power station.

Switchyard components were damaged in Monday's earthquake, which measured between 5.5 and 5.7 on the Richter scale, and was felt strongly in the Turangi and Tokaanu areas.

The earthquake had meant temporary changes in water management of the Tongariro power development, said the general manager of the Ministry of Energy’s Electricity Division, Mr K. D. McCool, yesterday. Seismologists are keeping a close watch on the area as the series of moderate earthquakes rocks the central North Island.

Residents have experienced many small shocks, and there has been minor damage to property, and nerves. Schoolchildren have been drilled to act when there is an earthquake. The centre of Monday’s tremor was placed near the same spot as a 5.5 earthquake last month. There were two other moderate tremors on Saturday night.

Mr McCool said the Electricity Division had had also to close the Ngarangi power station. The shortfall in generation was being made up by using more water from Lake Taupo. Full repairs at Tokaanu could take several days.
